Amanda McDonald Woods died peacefully in Iowa City, IA on December 10, surrounded by her family. Amanda was born on June 23, 1944 in Boston, MA, to Charles B. and Frances M. (Fisher) Woods and moved with them to Iowa City in 1945. She graduated from Iowa City High School and studied at Radcliffe College as a National Merit Scholar and later at the University of Iowa.

Amanda married Thomas Omer Cullen in Iowa City on June 22, 1970. They then moved to South Bend, IN and to Atlanta, GA in 1972, where their son Charles Woods Cullen was born in 1981. She devoted her life to her family, to learning and the arts, and to progressive political causes. Amanda came to Iowa City in August for medical treatment related to the brain cancer she’d struggled with since 1999 and was staying with her sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and John Whiston at the time of her death.

Amanda is survived by her husband Tom, at the family home in Atlanta, her son Charles, a law student at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, sisters Frances Woods and Elizabeth Woods and aunt Elizabeth Lokey, all of Fayetteville, AR, her sister Dorothy of Iowa City, several brothers- and sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
