Mark McCloy, 21, of Iowa City, IA died Saturday evening, March 18, 2006 as a result of a car accident in Pottawattamie County, Iowa. He was returning from a spring break in Colorado with four of his friends from The University of Iowa.

Mark was a junior at The University of Iowa, majoring in finance. He was a member and president of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and was a research assistant in Family Medicine at The University of Iowa Hospital.

Born on February 27, 1985 Mark is survived by his parents Clare K. and Clair E. McCloy of Carmel, IN and older sisters Margot, a Physical Therapy graduate student at Northwestern University in Chicago and Leslie, a senior in the School of Agriculture at Iowa State University.

Mark had the opportunity to live and attend schools in Ohio, Illinois, Belgium, Tennessee, Canada, and Iowa. His broad interests included music, politics, snowboarding, fitness, travel, reading Tolkien, fraternity events, dancing, and making friends with everyone. He was interested in a career in hospital administration after graduation and more advanced study. In 2003, Mark was an intern in Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack’s office at the Iowa State Capital Building in Des Moines. His interest in politics was sparked there and he followed the Iowa Caucus with great interest.

Mark’s taste in music was as broad as his interests in life. Sheryl Crow was an early favorite and he attended many of her concerts. He saw her three times in Iowa and you could usually hear a Sheryl CD in his car. Peter Jackson’s Lord of The Rings movies were viewed repeatedly by Mark. He always found something new in seeing them again.

His sisters and friends had many nick names for him including Fatty, Footie, Fatman, Chunk, Stormy, Ducky Down, The Prime Minister, Frodo, and Monty Rock III. He had strong ideas about so many subjects and was not afraid to defend those ideas. He was curious about other cultures and foods had no trouble making friends in Europe and Canada. His interest in snowboarding and hockey was influenced by his three years in a Canadian high school.

His family was very important to him. Mark was organized and highly motivated and he participated in helping both parents at home. One summer, he cut garden beds by hand for two months. The next summer he decided on an easier job of selling books door-to door in Veijo, CA. Mark also worked in a pet hospital in Toronto and at Target where he advanced over two summers. His grandmother understood his love of animals and she helped him grow a collection of rare animal statues. He loved to walk his beloved West Highland Terrier, Pippen and sleep with the cats, Coco and Bailey.

Mark’s involvement with the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi, Theta Theta Chapter at University of Iowa was life changing. He was a founding member and his friendships and participation in philanthropies and social events continued to evolve. He had great pride and love for these men.

Mark will be missed by everyone who knew him.
