Jay C. Oehler, 86, of North Liberty died peacefully Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at his home of lung cancer.

Jay was born July 9, 1920 in Pacific Junction, Iowa, the son of Roy and Ruth Coan Oehler. He served in the US Army with the 34th Infantry Division. Jay had served overseas in Northern Ireland, England, Algeria, Tunisia and Italy. On August 8, 1948 he married Nadine Lindeman at the First United Evangelical Church in Dysart, Iowa.

Jay was a graduate of the University of Iowa, and received his Juris Doctorate in 1951 from the University of Iowa College of Law. He was a longtime Iowa City area
attorney and real estate developer.

Jay was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he had served on the Board of Trustees. He was instrumental in the development of programs for the handicapped in Iowa City. Jay established a one room school house for the educating
of handicapped children, and later was a guiding force in the development of Systems Unlimited and Goodwill Industries in Iowa City.

Jay is survived by his wife, Nadine and their children, Susan Clayton of Brooklyn, NY and her daughter Emily, John (Janet) Oehler of St. Louis, MO. and their children Ryan and Rachel and Jane and Christine Oehler, both of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and step-father Charles Kaveney, his son-in-law Charles, one sister and three brothers.

A reception in the church hall will follow the service. Burial will be at Ridgewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church or Iowa City Hospice.
