Craig D. O’Connor, 67, of 404 Sierra Trail, died peacefully at home Wednesday, February 28, 2007, following a courageous six year battle with colon cancer.

Craig was born September 30, 1939 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of James and
Hazel Mason O’Connor. He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School, Iowa City in 1957. On October 17, 1987 he married Michele Buehler in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Craig served as Sergeant on the Iowa City Police Department from 1965-73. From 1973-76 he was a patrol deputy with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department. From 1976- 84 he was employed with UIHC Safety and Security and from 1988-2001 with UIHC Facilities Services.

Craig was a member of St. Thomas More Church and was a past president of the Iowa City Policeman’s Association.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Fr. Ed Fitzpatrick; Iowa City Hospice,
especially Hope Exline, Craig’s hospice nurse; and Dr. Mark Karwal, Annie Fleagle and SharonLee Wagner with UIHC for the excellent care and loving support they provided.

Craig is survived by his wife, Michele; and children, Cathleen (Lyn) Borchert of North Liberty; Teresa (Galen) Schneider of Coralville and their children Matthew and Megan;
Capt. Michael O’Connor USAF of San Antonio, TX. and his children Emily, Kelsey and Nathan; Sean O’Connor of Seattle, WA. and his son Quentin; Tara O’Connor of Seattle, WA.; and Ryan O’Connor at home; three siblings, Bernard (Joan) O’Connor and Charlotte Short, both of Cedar Rapids; Barbara (Dan) Coney of Quartzite, AZ.; and his in-laws, Kaye and Robert Whitmore, Mark (Laurie) Buehler, Mitchell Buehler, and Michael (Patti) Buehler, all of Sioux Falls, SD.

Craig was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Craig Dennis II; three siblings, Margaret, Kathryn and James; and his father-in-law Richard Buehler.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or to UIHC Clinical Cancer Center c/o The University of Iowa Foundation.
