Maxine C. Bowman Hotka, 77, of 114 Cottonwood Avenue in Iowa City, died Monday, March 26, 2007 in her home after a long illness.

Maxine was born July 24, 1929 in Iowa City, the daughter of Charles & Elizabeth (Semrad) Fuhrmeister. A lifelong resident of Iowa City, Maxine graduated from Iowa City High School in 1947. After high school, Maxine worked at the S.S. Kresge five & dime store in downtown Iowa City. She then worked at the Kirkwood Avenue Hy-Vee Food Store as a cashier for 20 years. and later, for 15 years, was the lead food worker for the Iowa City Community School District, retiring in 1994.

She married John “Jack” Bowman June 14, 1950 in Iowa City. Jack died in December, 1992.
Maxine then married long-time friend Philip Hotka on June 22, 2002 in Iowa City.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City Eagle’s Auxiliary, Iowa City Women of the Moose and the Naim Club. She enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing, cooking and dancing.

Survivors include her husband Phil Hotka of Iowa City; her children, James (Pat) Bowman of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Charles (Carolea) Bowman of St. Michael, Minnesota; Carol Bowman of Cumming, Georgia and Michael (Ginny) Bowman of Hills, Iowa; brother, Robert Fuhrmeister of Iowa City
sister, Betty Koss of Solon; sister-in-law, Louis Fuhrmeister of Mission, Texas; five grandchildren, Tracey Bowman, Tim Bowman, Cristy (Brian) Tadych, Corey Bowman and Corbin Bowman; three great grandchildren, Victoria Rose, Ashton Tadych and Aidan Tadych; many nieces and nephews.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack, two sisters in infancy, a sister Margaret Carson and a brother Louis Fuhrmeister.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.
