Alice J. E. Betterley, 97, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness.

Alice was born December 13, 1909 in Farmington, Minnesota, the daughter of John A. & Hilma
(Skold) Ostrom. Growing up in Reads Landing, Minnesota, she graduated from Wabesha High School in 1927 and earned her bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin –Stout – in 1932.

Alice married Melvin Betterley June 29, 1934 in Minneapolis.

She was a homemaker & also taught school while living in Duluth, Minnesota. Alice had been a resident of Iowa City since 1952 and was a member of First United Methodist Church, Church Circle, University Club and was a volunteer with the Mercy Hospital Guild.

Survivors include her son Richard Betterley & his wife Peggy of Boynton Beach, Florida.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Melvin in 2004, a son Joseph Betterley, 10 brothers and 3 sisters.

Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.
