Wayne Chadima, 79, of 828 Dearborn Street, Iowa City died Sunday, July 22 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a lengthy illness.

Wayne Franklin Chadima was born on July 5, 1928 to Frank and Libbie (Kuba) Chadima in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS G.M. Randall in the Pacific theatre during the closing days of World War II. Following the war, Wayne attended Coe College and the University of Iowa. In 1948, he married Barbara Dytrt of Cedar Rapids. To them were born three children: JoAnn Irene, Kathryn Lee, and John Michael.

Wayne and Barbara raised their family in Iowa City, where Wayne worked for Firestone Tire Company and Patterson Dental Supply, before joining the University of Iowa Purchasing Department in 1963. He served as Director of the Purchasing Department from 1976 until his retirement in 1993.

Wayne Chadima was a loving and devoted husband, father,grandfather, and great grandfather to his family, and he was known among his many friends and colleagues as a kind and considerate man who always was willing to lend a helpful hand and offer an encouraging word. Wayne was an avid Hawkeye fan who enjoyed spending time with his family, volunteering for various Church activities, doing woodworking projects, playing golf and tennis, and participating in the New Horizon Band.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, especially his beloved wife, Barbara; daughter Joanie Bailey and her husband, Bryan; daughter Kathy and her life partner, Paula Blackard; son John and friend, Donald Black; grandson Chad Bailey, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, Ella; grandson Jonathan Bailey, his wife, Angela, and their son, Ethan; brother-in-law Lee Dytrt; brother-in-law Joseph Dytrt and his wife Catherine; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Smith.

The family wishes to express their grateful thanks to the staff at Lantern Park for their care and support of Wayne and Barbara over the past four years and to thank the staff at Mercy Hospital for providing care and comfort during these past few weeks. The family also expresses appreciation to Dr. Paul Mulhausen and Dr. William Dull for their care and concern for Wayne.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to St. Anthony’s Bread, the Iowa City Animal Shelter, or St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City.
