Mary Beth Schuppert, 85, of Iowa City died peacefully Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at
Mercy Hospice Care.

Family Graveside Services will be held Friday at Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 pm Thursday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a time of sharing will be held at 7pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, Iowa City Community Theatre or the Christian Science Society.

Mary Beth was born August 3, 1923 in Omaha, the daughter of James E. Swartz and Helen Trimble. Mary Beth was raised in Sioux City and Holstein, moving to Iowa City in 1941, where she received her BA from the University of Iowa. On June 30, 1946 she married John E. Schuppert.

Mary Beth and her husband, John owned and operated The Frame House and Gallery on N. Linn St. from 1956 to1987.

Mary Beth was a member of the Christian Science Society, Chi Omega Sorority, the Altrusa Club, Pilots Club, Iowa City Women’s Club, American Assn. of University Women and University Club. She was a founding member of Iowa City Community Theatre. Mary Beth had served as the president of ICCT, and was well known for her theatrical talents, both as director and actor.

Mary Beth enjoyed bridge, reading and the time spent with family and friends, especially the lunches with WWW.

Mary Beth is survived by her two sons; Chris (Sheila) Schuppert of Hudson and David (BettyAllison) Schuppert of Iowa City, five grandchildren, Nicole (John) Riehl, Emily Allison, Phil Schuppert, Cora and Austin Allison-Schuppert; two great grandchildren, Evan and Avery; her brother, Don (Sue) Porterfield of Ocala, FL.
She was preceded in death by her husband and step father, Ray Porterfield.
