Maurine Jacobsen Summerwill, 99, Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and formerly of Iowa City, died peacefully on October 16, 2007.

Maurine was born August 30, 1908, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Carl Christian Jacobsen and Cora Robertson Jacobsen. She graduated from Mapleton High School where she played basketball. She was a graduate of the University of Iowa and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. On December 31, 1932, she married William Wengert Summerwill and moved to Sioux City where she was a member of Junior League. She moved with her husband to Iowa City in 1938 and lived there until moving to Cedar Rapids in 1997.

In Iowa City she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Chapter KQ, P.E.O. She was a volunteer at Mercy and Veterans’ Hospitals. She enjoyed cheering for the Hawkeyes, helping her husband with his hobby of training and showing golden retrievers, playing golf (two holes in one!) and bridge. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be remembered for her ever-gracious, smiling personality that remained with her to the end of her 99 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Beth Ann Swaney (Robert,) Cedar Rapids; and son, William Richard Summerwill (Joyce,) Iowa City. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Tracy S. McCormick (Kenneth,) Pasadena, CA; Susan L. Swaney (Ian Woollen,) Bloomington, IN; Kelly Summerwill (Robert Shulz,) Chicago, IL; David L. Swaney, Washington D.C.; and Jeffrey W. Summerwill (Bridget,) St. Charles, IL; and six great-grandchildren: Jacobsen Woollen, Katherine Hampton, Thomas and Ryan Summerwill, Ann Shulz and Charles McCormick, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Summerwill and a brother, Charles C. Jacobsen.

The family wishes to express gratitude to Dr. Brian Lindo and to the staff of Cottage Grove Place Health Center for their kind and loving care.

Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Project Green in Iowa City or to Cottage Grove Place Foundation in Cedar Rapids.
