Jose Protacio Bondoc “Joe” Gallardo, went home to our Lord on Saturday, May 30, 2009, surrounded by members of his loving family, following a brave and valiant battle with cancer.

Joe was born on June 19, 1926, the second of five children to the late Mariano and Jacinta Gallardo in San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines, and was a Registered Pharmacist in the Philippines, Iowa, and Illinois. Joe graduated in 1950 from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, with a B.S. in Pharmacy. He was very active during his college years and his accomplishments included serving as President of the Pharmacy Supreme Council, Junior Pharmaceutical Association (Gamma Chapter), and Pharma Frat, Assistant Treasurer of the Holy Name Society, Chairman of the Student Catholic Action, and Assistant Editor of the 1950 THOMASIAN. Joe was also a member of the Galenos Club, UST Cooperative, and the Knights of Columbus. Following his graduation, Joe was named to the UST Faculty of Pharmacy, where he would later meet his beloved future wife, the former Purificacion “Puring ” Santos. Puring graduated from UST with a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1956 and immediately afterwards joined the Faculty of Pharmacy.

In 1958, Joe was granted a Fulbright Scholarship and took a leave of absence from his teaching duties at UST to pursue graduate studies at the University of Iowa. During this time he was elected to associate membership in the Society of the Sigma Xi (University of Iowa Chapter) and was also a member of RHO CHI (University of Iowa Chapter). Joe earned his Master of Science degree in Hospital Pharmacy from U of I in 1960 with advanced training in administration and production. While Joe was studying at U of I, he was commissioned by the UST Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy for extra projects regarding the study of biochemistry and was instrumental in his later role as a committee member in the establishment of the Biochemistry program at UST.

Joe was recalled back to UST in 1962 and resumed his duties as an associate professor in the UST Faculty of Pharmacy. He also served as President of the Philippine Pharmaceutical Association and the Philippine Society of Hospital Pharmacists as well as Chairman of the Council of Health Agencies of the Philippines. By 1964, Joe was one of the founding members and first elected president of the newly formed Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Associations (FAPA). Joe was later named lifetime honorary FAPA president and continued to serve on their bureau of directors until the time of his passing. He was also President of the Philippine Chapter of the University of Iowa Alumni Association.

Joe and Puring were married on July 30, 1966, in Manila. Joe returned to Iowa City with Puring and he worked for the U of I College of Pharmacy as an Instructor and Supervisor for the Department of Pharmaceutical Services. Joe and Puring settled in Iowa City, where three of their four children were born. In 1970 he was installed as a member of the American Board of Diplomates in Pharmacy.

Looking for new horizons to conquer, Joe and Puring relocated to the Village of Posen, Illinois in 1972. In 1973 Joe opened his own Professional Pharmacy (Posen Pharmacy) next to the Medical Center where Puring’s brother was a doctor. Joe and Puring settled into life in Posen, where Joe learned to speak Polish, sponsored his daughter’s softball team to two championship seasons, and served as the Director of Posen’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency. The Posenites considered Joe as “honorary Polish” and affectionately called him “Joe Gallardski” Puring’s nickname also morphed into Purie. Joe was a member of the St. Stanislaus Parish Holy Name Society and the Chairman of the parish Ways and Means Committee. As Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Joe was instrumental in the organization of popular fund-raising events such as the parish’s Hawaiian Luau Dinner Dance and the Polynesian Night. He envisioned the concept of an official Village Flag during a 75th Anniversary celebration for Posen and approached the mayor and other trustees with his ideas. A design was created and Joe donated the very first official flag to the Village of Posen in 1976. In 1977, he was elected to full Fellowship in the American College of Apothecaries (FACA). He also served as Assistant Director of Pharmacy at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago while continuing to own and operate Posen Pharmacy.

Joe and Purie returned to Iowa City in the 1980’s, and Joe continued to practice community pharmacy in a number of pharmacies in Cedar Rapids, Fort Madison, and Iowa City. He and Purie were also members of St. Mary’s Church. In 1996, Joe was named as a Fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP). His expertise and caring in patient care were evidenced by the number of patients who followed him from pharmacy to pharmacy. He frequently traveled and lectured at various pharmaceutical congresses, conferences, and meetings worldwide and wrote numerous published papers, articles, and editorials throughout his career and after his retirement. His numerous awards and recognitions included the Distinguished Service Award from the Pan American Congress of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, the Dr. Sebastian Sanchez Award for Pharmacy from UST, the Golden Jubilee Award from the Philippine Pharmaceutical Association, the Lecturer Award from FAPA, and perhaps the one that meant the most to him, the UST Outstanding Thomasian Alumni TOTAL Award for Health Care.
Joe “retired” in 2005 but remained active in the pharmaceutical world. He and Purie founded the UST Pharmacy, Medical Technology, Biochemistry, and Botany Alumni Association (USTPMTBBAA) and were instrumental in the organization of their reunions.

Joe and Purie had four children, Claire, Jose, Greg, and Martin, who he loved dearly. Joe shared his love of sports with his children and was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, the Chicago White Sox, and Tiger Woods. In his later years he would travel to San Antonio to watch the Hawkeyes play in the Alamo Bowl with Jose. He also was blessed with two wonderful grandchildren, Gavin and Brandalee, and delighted in seeing them entertain him with song and dance.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of nearly 43 years, Purie, their four children and two grandchildren, Claire Gallardo (Eric Rashid) of Anchorage, AK, Jose of San Antonio, TX, Greg of Iowa City, Martin (Brandie) of Marion and their children Gavin and Brandalee; sisters Sor. Ma. Rosaria Gallardo of San Jose, CA and Mercedes (Paterno) Nacorda of West Bloomfield, MI; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Alfonso and Rufino
