Dr. Herbert L. “Bert” Jackson age 81 formerly of 614 Greenwood Drive, Iowa City died on Saturday, February 15, 2003, at the Williamsburg Care Center, in Williamsburg. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at the St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, 3650 Cottage Grove Ave. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday at the church from 5:00 p.m., until a Trisagion service is held at 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to the St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church Building Fund or the Annetta Marie Jackson Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o University of Iowa Foundation. For his colleges and friends at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic’s who are unable to attend the service in Cedar Rapids, you may sign a guest register and spend a moment of reflection in his honor Tuesday and Wednesday at the Herbert L. Jackson and Howard Latourette Library and Conference Room, first floor of the General Hospital at the University Of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 21, 2003, at the Richfield Cemetery, Richfield, KS. Herbert Lewis Jackson was born on May 9, 1921 in Sawyer, Kansas, the oldest child of Roy A. and Grace (Stoops) Jackson. In the summer of 1930 the Jackson family moved to a farm west of Richfield, Kansas in Morton County. In May of 1939 he graduated Valedictorian from Elkhart High School, Elkhart, Kansas. He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas in May of 1943 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics.

Bert joined the United States Army in June of 1943; he entered Officers Candidate School and was commissioned second lieutenant. He attended Radar School at Harvard and M.I.T., and from January to August of 1946 he severed in the Philippines. He married Mary Alice Tritt on August 28, 1946 and taught high school math and physics at Stafford, Kansas. In 1947 the family moved to Madison, Wisconsin where he began graduate school at the University of Wisconsin. He received his Master’s Degree in the fall of 1949 and his PH.D. in Physics in June of 1952. Following graduation the family sailed to Europe where Dr. Jackson accepted a position at the University in Basel, Switzerland. In 1954 they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where he severed as Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Nebraska.

In 1960 Dr. Jackson moved to Iowa City and the University Of Iowa. He started in the Radiation Research Lab, in 1961 he was promoted to Associate Professor and in 1965 he transferred to the Department of Radiology, Division of Radiation Therapy. In 1970 promoted to full professor and in 1985 he was commended for 25 years of continues service to the Department of Radiology. Dr. Jackson authored two textbooks for the department along with numerous articles in professional journals. His field of expertise was Lithium Floride Dosimerty. Dr. Jackson will be remembered for his mentoring abilities to so many of his students, one such student from Iowa City City High School later was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

His family includes his daughter, Ruth “Stephanie” Zousel of Wichita, Kansas; granddaughters, Roxanne Zousel of Mill Valley, California and Michelle Osterberg of Escanaba, Michigan; great-grandson: Austin Zousel of Lawrence, Kansas; brother: Larry A. Jackson D.V.M. of Alto, New Mexico; former son in-law, John Zousel of Richfield, Kansas. His parents, brother, Arthur Leon Jackson; daughter, Annetta Marie (Jackson) Coyer and grandson Richard Zousel preceded him in death.

Bert’s family would like to thank the Williamsburg Care Center for the four years of excellent care, Dr. John Rachow for his medical care and expertise and Minette Black of Iowa City, his professional caregiver and personal friend of seven years.
