Mary D. “Polly” Stockman, 90, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center, following a short illness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove on Saturday, August16, 2008 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Oxford. Visitation will be held at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville on Friday from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9-10 a.m. at the parish hall in Cosgrove. A rosary will be recited at Lensing’s Oak Hill on Friday at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The American Cancer Society.

Polly was born on January 6, 1918 in Kinross, IA, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (McKenna) Florang. She was raised in Kinross and Riverside and later graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Riverside. On April 26, 1938, she married Leo “Dutch” Stockman at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside. Dutch and Polly farmed in rural Oxford.

Polly was very active in numerous organizations including St. Peter’s Catholic Church, The Catholic Order of Foresters and The Altar & Rosary Society. She loved to garden and gave away countless flowers and plants that currently bless the yards and gardens around Cosgrove and Oxford. Polly provided numerous flowers that adorned the altar for everything from Sunday masses to weddings.

Polly is survived by her two daughters, Rosemary (George) Rootes of Huntington Beach, CA and Ellen (Charles) Smith of Fair Oaks, CA, and her four sons, Tom (Heather) Stockman of Iowa City, IA, Dan (Thea) Stockman of Hereford, TX, Dave (Anne) Stockman of Chesterfield, MO and Harry (Diane) Stockman of St. Louis, MO. Polly is also survived by her daughter-in-law Rita (Tim) Stockman of Shertz, TX, 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Polly was preceded in death by her loving husband Leo “Dutch” and one son Tim Stockman. Also, she was preceded in death by her sisters Margaret Florang, Ann Moore and Ellen Snellenbarger, her brother Frank Florang and three grandchildren.
