Helen G. Hughes, 96, of 2332 Liberty Drive in Coralville, died in her home, Tuesday, August 12, 2008.

Helen was born August 4, 1912 in Iowa City, the daughter of Homer and Maude (Whittaker) Hughes.
She was reared in Iowa City and Lansing, Michigan, where she was graduated from Central High School. She attended Lansing Business College and studied for one year at Michigan State University. Helen returned to Iowa City in 1939 and was employed as a medical assistant, first in the office of Dr. Stephen C. Ware for 14 years and later for Dr. Philip McLaughlin for 16 years, retiring in 1970.

Helen was a member of First United Methodist Church in Iowa City for more than 55 years; was a life member of Eastern Star and White Shrine; a life member of Beta Sigma Phi; a member of local and national chapters of American Business Women’s Association; and a member of local, state and national chapters of the American Association of Medical Assistants. She was a volunteer at the Iowa City Public Library, the V.A. Hospital, and Walden Place, where she lived and also taught arts and crafts.

Helen is survived by her niece Anita Hughes of Lansing, Michigan, 19 great-nieces and great-nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Donald Hughes, niece Rhonda Hughes and nephews Richard Hughes and Gregory Hughes.
