Wilbur E. Westen, 74, of Iowa City, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics following a long illness.

Wilbur was born February 16, 1934 in Washington, Iowa, the son of George and Georgia (Ballard) Westen. Raised in Washington, Wilbur lived in Oxford and Iowa City. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War in the Military Police. He married Patricia Nelson June 7, 1959 in Washington, Iowa. The couple later divorced.

Wilbur worked for Montgomery Wards Co. in the Washington and Iowa City stores. He later worked as a custodian for Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric Company in Iowa City for 17 years – retiring in 1992,

He was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Iowa City and played the clarinet with the
Washington Municipal Band and the Iowa City Community Band for seven years. Most recently, Wilbur attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in Coralville.

Survivors include his sons, Jerry (Korri) Westen of Solon, Daniel (Susan) Westen and Tim Westen, all of Coralville; grandchildren, Michael Westen, Derek Westen, Amanda Westen, Travis Westen and Matthew Westen; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Faith, Daniel Jr. and Drake; sister Irene West (Joe) of Washington, Iowa; his former wife Pat of Coralville and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister and 1 brother.
