John V. Hartnett, 72, of Morse died Friday, September 19, 2008 at Lantern Park Care Center of lung cancer.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am, Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at St. Wenceslaus Church with Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Graveside Services with Military Honors will be conducted at 2pm, Tuesday at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7pm at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or American Legion Post #1976.

John was born March 4, 1936 in Des Moines, the son of George and Esther Crane Hartnett. On April 27, 1963 he married Flora Norris in Des Moines.

John was employed by the Iowa National Guard for 30 years, where he was the OMS shop foreman for the 234th signal Battalion and the 109th Medical Division. He retired in 1988. Since 1992 he served as the Hospital Representative for the Iowa Dept. of the American Legion. John served 36 continuous years in military service, including the Korean and Lebanon Wars and Viet Nam. He was a member of many military organizations including American Legion Post 1976, North Liberty and the DAV Chapter 19.

He is survived by his wife Flora of Morse and their children, George Allen Hartnett of Iowa City, Steven James Hartnett of Oxford and Sally Marie (Robert) O’ Rear of North Liberty; 7 grandchildren, Crystal, Dyvonne, Tyler, Cody, Michael, Daniel and Zander.

He was preceded by his parents and one daughter, Mary Lee.
