Joan Sayers (nee Fawcett) Caraway died at Crestview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, October 21 following a long illness. Private family services were held on Wednesday.
She graduated from Aurora (Missouri) High School in 1943 and attended Gulfpark College in Gulfport, Mississippi and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1946. There she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and majored in dramatic arts. She worked as a model, at one point displaying Tucker automobiles at an auto show in Chicago. She married H. Bob Fawcett and lived for many years in Cedar Rapids. She divorced Fawcett in 1969 and worked for American Travel and Tour as a travel consultant.
She married L. Dean Caraway, M.D. in 1971 and resided in the Amana Colonies, where her husband practiced as a family physician, before moving to Tucson, Arizona for retirement.
Joan was a member of Cedar Rapids and Elmcrest Country Clubs, the Junior League of Cedar Rapids, and PEO. She was active in both Cedar Rapids Community Theater and Children’s Theater (where, for many years, she played Playtime Poppy, an ear of corn).
She had a passion for cooking, decorating, entertaining, and exploring the world. She loved golf, West Highland white terriers, and of course her grandchildren, with whom she often traveled.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and is survived by three children, Robert (Christy) Fawcett of York, Pennsylvania, John (Elizabeth) Fawcett of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and Eadie (Mark) Weaver of Iowa City. She had four grandchildren, Julia Fawcett, Claire Fawcett, Allyson Weaver, and Christian Weaver.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Crestview, who together were able to make Joan’s final years not only comfortable, but dignified.
