Louise C. Pauley Croskey, 94, of Iowa City, died Thursday, November 20, 2008 at Iowa City Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center following a lengthy illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am, Monday, November 24, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City,
where a Vigil Service will be held at 3:30pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Catholic Community Foundation.Louise was born March 31, 1914 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Annabelle (Shay) Schlenk. Louise was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Iowa City and attended the University of Iowa. On May 26, 1936 she married Glenn Pauley, Sr., at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City. Glenn died December 24, 1981.On October 22, 1987, Louise married Earl Croskey in Stone City, Iowa. Earl died in March of 2007.
A lifelong resident of Iowa City, Louise received her dental assistant certification from the University of Iowa and was one of the first dental assistants employed at the UI College of Dentistry, Pediatric Department. After leaving the University she worked with several Iowa City dentists. Upon retirement Louise and Glenn started Candle Creations, a professional candle making business. They supplied stationary and gift stores in the area with custom made candles. They traveled extensively in the United States giving and attending workshops on candle making. In 1976 as part of the restoration of the Old Capitol, Glenn and Louise donated 200 hand dipped tallow candles for use throughout the building.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, St. Mary’s Altar & Rosary Society, Iowa City Women’s Club and the International Guild of Candle Artisans.
Louise loved flower gardening, African violets, bonfires in the fall with her grandchildren, complete with s’mores, making her “special hot dogs”, and creating memories at Christmas
time with and for her grandchildren.The family would like to thank the staff of Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center for their loving care of Louise.
Survivors include her son, Glenn R. Pauley Jr. (Ann) of Coralville and her, daughter Anna May Miller (Charles) of Iowa City; six grandchildren, Jennifer Pauley and Bridget Pauley of Coralville, Christine Thompson (Darrin) of Iowa City, Glenn Pauley, III (Alison) of Solon, Blaine Miller (Marlana) and Stephanie Miller of Cedar Rapids; six great-grandchildren, Connor and Quinn Miller of Cedar Rapids, Spencer and Madeline Thompson of Iowa City, Nolan and Mason Pauley of Solon; two sisters-in-law, Mary Schlenk of Cedar Rapids and June McConnell of Indianola.
Louise was preceded in death by both husbands, sisters, Coletta Schlenk and Lois Thomas and two brothers, Joseph Schlenk and William Schlenk.
