Evelyn J. Monk, 101, of Iowa City died Thursday, March 26, 2009 in West Branch, Iowa
Funeral Services will be held at 10 am, Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Paul Akin officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 8pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.Mrs. Monk was born September 21, 1907 in Iowa City, the daughter of Joseph and Jennie
Maresh Kanak. She married Harold J. Monk in Crown Point, Indiana on June 6, 1934. She was a graduate of Iowa City High School and the University of Iowa. Mrs. Monk worked as a librarian at West High School in Waterloo, Iowa and at the University of Iowa. She began the elementary school library program for the Iowa City Community School District in 1954 and directed it until her retirement in 1972.She was a lifetime member of the Iowa State Education Association, and a member of
Iowa’s first Story League, Pilot Club of Iowa City, Phi Mu, and the First United Methodist Church. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, attending many spring training games, and of Hawkeye sports, holding season tickets for many years to Iowa Women’s Basketball.She is survived by sons David Harold Monk (Janet) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and
Gerald Robert Monk (Eloise) of Grundy Center, Iowa and daughter Janis Elizabeth
Bright (Douglas) of Rapid City, South Dakota, nine grandchildren, David J. Monk (Kari),
Gerald A. Monk (Michelle), Steven G. Monk (Monica), Jesse A. Monk (Sherri), Carol A. Monk, Terri L. Gureno (Joe), Charlotte L. Bright (Jason Lees), Elizabeth A. Bright and Christopher J. Bright (Moira), seventeen great grandchildren, her brothers Robert Kanak (Dee) of Iowa City and Arthur Kanak (Fran) of St. Charles, Missouri, and sisters Marion Settelmayer of Iowa City and Alice Houston of Leesburg, Florida.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Joseph Allen Monk, one brother Joseph Harold Kanak, two sisters Gladys Kanak Furminger and Lois Kanak Masters.
