James W. Higgins, 66, of Iowa City, died peacefully at his home on Friday, April 24, 2009 from cancer.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City.
The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Iowa City with Dr. John Caldwell officiating. Friends may also call Monday morning at the church after 10:00 am.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the “Walleye Jim” Lake Delton Fish Restocking Memorial c/o Hills Bank & Trust Co., 1401 S. Gilbert Street, Iowa City, Iowa, 52240. (Lake Delton in Wisconsin was damaged by the 2008 flood).

Jim was born November 8, 1942 in Sullivan County, Missouri, the son of William and Reta (Moots) Higgins. Growing up and graduating from high school in Green City, Missouri, Jim graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville, Missouri. He married Donna Lile November 21, 1964 in Winigan, Missouri. Jim had a successful career with the Social Security Administration
for 36 years. He retired in 1999 after serving as manager of the local Iowa City office for 22 years.

He was active in St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and a member of Iowa City Evening Lions Club, Monday Morning Quarterback Club and the I Club. Jim very much enjoyed golfing with friends and Hawkeye football. His passion was spent with his family and friends fishing at the family cabin at Lake Delton, Wisconsin.

Survivors include his wife Donna; sons, Scott (Marlo) Higgins of Iowa City and John (Trina) Higgins of West Lafayette, Indiana; five grandchildren, Taylor, Grant, Jacob, Alex and Benjamin; brother and sister in law, Bill & Christine Lile of Richmond, Virginia, sister in law, Ardith Higgins of Moberly, Missouri, father and mother in law, Donald and Lola Mae Lile of Winigan, Missouri; several nieces and nephews and an aunt, June Allen (Jay) of Bevier, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother William and two sisters, Donna Jean and Rosemary.
