Tonya Shirley Ann Harger, 57, of 2801 Highway 6 East in Iowa City, died Sunday, May 17, 2009 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City from cancer.

Tonya chose to be cremated. The family will host private memorial service at a later date.
Burial will be in the Bethel Chapel Cemetery in rural Clarke, County. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Iowa City American Legion Post 17, 3016 Muscatine Avenue, Iowa City, 52240 or the Veterans Administration Medical Center, 601 Hwy. 6 West, Iowa City, 52246 – The Meals for Veterans Program.

Born June 26, 1951 in Salvo, North Carolina, the daughter of Leslie Whidbee and Agnes (LaChance) Porrazzo. Graduating from McCann High School in North Adams Ma, She graduated Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. Shirley Ann grew up in Williamstown MA.

She married Herman Harger January 21, 1977 in Woodburn, Iowa. She resided in Leon until 2001.
Moving to Iowa City in 2001, she worked for Lakeside Apartments in Iowa City as a grant coordinator.
Her biggest hobby was crafting, sewing, making candy and candles. She donated her crafts to anybody and everybody.

She was very active in the Iowa City American Legion. She was active in Meals for Veterans at the VA Hospital. She was also very active in Bikers for kids.

Survivors include her sons, John “J.D.” Harger (Pam) of Osceola, Stephen Harger (Stephanie) and Donald “Donnie” Harger, all of Leon and Christopher Harger of Cherokee;
nine grandchildren; two sisters, Joanne Dunn and Sandy Nugent-Vigil (Hector), all of Des Moines, many nieces and nephews and her father, Leslie Kendall Whidbee, of Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother in April 2002, and her husband Herman in October 2000.
