Dr. Wallace Johnson, 82 died Sunday morning May 17, 2009 at UIHC following a short illness.

“Wally” was raised in LaMore, ND and began his professional career as a pharmacist in a small N.D. drug store. He decided dentistry was his real passion, and earned his MS and DDS in 1957 from the UI College of Dentistry. He joined their faculty in 1958, and served as head of operative dentistry from 1964 to 1992. After retiring in 1993, Wally spent many hours playing his tuba with the St. Andrew brass ensemble, the new Horizons Band, a polka band, and a brass quintet. He also enjoyed oil painting, wood working, gardening, and singing in barbershop quartets and his church choir.

He is survived by his wife Jane of 57 years, and their children : Rhonda Halvorsen of Iowa City, Keith Johnson of Aberdeen, NC; Georgia Johnson of Lincoln, Neb, and Ward Johnson of Snowmass, Colorado; 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and his constant maltese companion, Sophie.

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday, May 21, 2009 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with Revs. Robert David and Kyle Otterbein officiating. A time of fellowship will follow. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in his name.
