Elizabeth (Sherly) Elbert, 56, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at UIHC of cancer.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 1:30pm at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave, Iowa City, and after 12:30 Tuesday at the Church. A memorial fund has been established.

Elizabeth, known to some friends as Sherly, was born March 27, 1953 in Daram, Samar, The Philippines, the daughter of Francisco and Asuncion Reyes Santianez Ramirez. On February 10, 1977 Sherly married Mark Elbert in the Phillipines, where they met while Mark served in the US Navy.

Elizabeth owned and operated the Bituin Sari Sari Grocery in Coralville, which she opened in 2005. Prior to that Elizabeth had been employed at Wal-Mart and UIHC. She was a gifted seamstress.

Elizabeth is survived by her loving husband, Mark and their two children and one grandson; Evelyn (Javier) Perez of Ewa Beach, HI and their son, Gavin and Edward Elbert of Iowa City; three siblings, Josie Datu, Franciso Jr., and Reynaldo, all of the Philippines; brother and sisters-in-law, Patrick (Coleen) Elbert, Mary (Terry) Rutledge and Kay Fate (Russ Lucas); 21 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Linda.
