Douglas L. Levien, 57 formerly of Iowa City, died Friday, November 14, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in his memory to the church. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com.
Doug was born January 10, 1951, in Davenport, Iowa the son of Lloyd and Alice (Buck) Levien. His family moved to Iowa City in 1953, where he was a graduate of City High School. Doug had been employed by a various local restaurants, retail outlets, and most recently, by the Iowa City Press-Citizen as an independent carrier. His customers enjoyed his friendly manner and witty repartee. He was an enthusiastic user of the Iowa City Public Library. Doug enjoyed coaching local youth in sports; he was an avid golfer and folk dancer. He especially enjoyed teaching Balkan and Israeli dances to the local folk dance club. He will be fondly remembered for his good humored teaching style, and for his softly singing along with the dance music in Hebrew or Serbo-Croatian. Doug moved to the Washington Care Center about six months ago.
His family includes and uncle, Lawrence Levien of Hot Springs, AR, and a number of cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
