William J. 'Newt' Holland, 86, a resident of Atrium Village, Iowa City, died there Sun, Feb 25, 1996, after an extended illness. Funeral Mass: 11 am Wed, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Iowa City, by the Rev. Robert Busher. Burial in St. Joseph's cem, Iowa City. Friends may call from 2 - 6 pm Tues at Donohoe-Lensing Funeral Home, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 4 pm.
Survivors include his wife, Marion (Beecher) of Hills, a daughter, Marilyn Holland Maher and husband David of Salt Lake City, a son Jim of Chicago, two sisters, Mary Donohoe and Lavella Kern, both of Iowa City and six grandchildren, Mark, Mike, Anne, Dan, Dave and Kevin.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Francis 'Stuffy'.
The son of William and Kate Curry Holland, Mr. Holland was born Mar 25, 1909 in Cosgrove, where he married Marion Beecher on Nov 9, 1937. He was a Johnson County deputy sheriff for 17 years and had also served as an Iowa City policeman for 22 years. Mr. Holland was a member of the Marquette Council Knights of Cloumbus, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Iowa State Police Association.
