Joseph S. Hebl, age 89, of 3867 James Avenue, S.W., Iowa City died Thursday, January 16, 2003 at Lantern Park Care and Rehab Center in Coralville following a short illness.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8pm today at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Private family services will be held at a later date with burial at the Lone Tree Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Joe’s memory to Lantern Park Care and Rehab Center or to the donor’s choice. Joe was born March 4, 1913, in Union Township of Johnson County, Iowa the son of John and Mary (Worrel) Hebl. He married Kathryn M. Aubrecht on November 30, 1937, in Iowa City. Joe has been a lifelong area livestock farmer until moving to the care center. He loved farming, never considering it as work, it brought him great joy and fulfillment throughout his lifetime. He had served as School Director of Union Township School No. 2 for several years. Joe always had time for his family and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren who he loved dearly.

His family includes his wife of over sixty-five years, Kathryn; two sons, Wilfred “Willy” J. Hebl and Paul E. Hebl and his wife, Diane all of Iowa City; three grandchidlren, Todd Hebl of Coralville, Elisha Hamm and her husband, Mike of Iowa City, and Raquel Jones and her husband, Max of West Branch; six great-grandchildren, Andy, Brent, and Chandler Hamm, Joey, Katie, and Rita Jones.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Lawrence; and a brother, Edward.
