James I. “Jim” Nelson age 63 died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 in his home near Iowa City with his family by his side after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with Pastor Royce Phillips officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A memorial to Hospice of Iowa City has been established in Jim’s name.
Jim was born December 17, 1939 to Roy and Irene (Carriker) Nelson in Muscatine and was raised in the Washington County area where he attended rural Red Brick and Franklin Center Schools. On July 26, 1956 he married Dorothy Coblentz and later moved to the Johnson county area. Their marriage was dissolved in 1977. On July 7, 1984 he was united in marriage to Darlene (Schooley) Rose in Las Vegas, NV. Jim was a farmer in his earlier years and was employed by the Iowa City Coach Co. as a bus mechanic, driver, and driver trainer for 28 years. He was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Solos of Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, Ocean Waves Square Dance Club, Iowa Wanderers and Sun and Fun Camping Clubs.
His family includes his wife, Darlene, two daughters; Juanita Mae Nelson, of Iowa City, and Donna Duree and her husband, Gene or North Liberty; two sons; Jim and his wife Kim of Solon, IA, and Mike and his wife Janine of Earlham, IA, two step-sons; Jerry Tisinger and his wife Susan of Germantown, MD and Ron Tisinger and his wife Susan of Los Gatos, CA and one step-daughter; Kathy Rains and her companion Cecil Gott of Iowa City, two brothers; Bob Nelson and his wife Bev of North Liberty and Charles (Chick) Nelson and his companion Betty of Columbus Junction, IA and one sister; Patty Edwards and her husband Dan of Coralville, seven grandchildren; fifteen step-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by one infant son; Steven, and one infant daughter; Edna, his mother and father, one sister; Alice Mae, and two brother-in-laws; Ray Schooley, and Don Schooley. Jim will be long remembered by all who touched his life. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service’s are caring for Jim’s services and his family.
