DEATH TAKES THOMAS CRAIN

Pioneer Resident of City Passes; Rites to be Thursday

Mr. Thomas B. Crain, pioneer resident of Iowa City, died Monday night at his residence, 310 South Capitol Street. He has been an invalid since last August and had been ill for the last two or three years.

Mr. Crain was born in a house on the southeast corner of Linn street and Iowa Avenue in the early ‘50’s. His parents immigrated to Johnson County from Uniontown, Pa., in 1850 and soon after Thomas’ birth settled on a farm southwest of Solon. His father clerked in a general store known as John Powell’s store on West Washington Street near the center of the block facing the university campus and walked to hand from work, the distance from his farm to the store being 12 or 13 miles.

Mr. Crain formerly was engaged in business for several years and conducted a feed and sale barn on the corner of Capital and College streets where the Ford garage now is located.

Mr. Crain formerly was a member of the Iowa City board of aldermen, representing the first ward.

Mr. Crain is survived by his widow; a brother, Mr. O.L. Crain of West Liberty; three nephews, Messrs. Charles B. Crain of Iowa City, Mr. Fred B. Crain of near Iowa City and Mr. Clifford Crain of California, and three nieces, Mrs. Paul Burroughs of Santa Monica, Calif., Blanche Crain of Corvalis, Ore., and Mrs. E.A. Baldwin of Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon at the Hohenschuh mortuary. The Rev. Llewelyn A. Owen will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
