1919 – 4 April - The Iowa City Citizen

John Bollei, Iowa City Pioneer, Dies

John A. Bollei, one of Iowa City’s oldest pioneers, passed away this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John A. Strub. Death was due to the infirmities of old age, the pioneer being in his eighty-seventh year. He was born in Germany November 23, 1832 and came to America at the age of twenty-one. For more than sixty years, Mr. Bollei has been a resident of Iowa City, where he has become well known to a great number of citizens. In October 1860, he was married in Iowa City to Miss Rosa Kintz. His wife and one daughter, Mrs. J.J. Thompson, preceded Mr. Bollei in death by a few years. Six children survive the death of their aged father, Mrs. Charles Merrifield of Golden, Colo., Mrs. Elmer Parrott of Larimer, Iowa, Mrs. George Hess, Mrs. John Strub, John Bollei, and Charles Bollei all of Iowa City.

In life, the esteemed pioneer was a most excellent citizen and true friend. He won and maintained the respect of the community during the long years he resided here and in death he leaves a large following of acquaintances and friends who will sincerely mourn his loss.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock but will be private. Internment will be made in Oakland cemetery.
