William F. “Bill” Poggenpohl age 93 of Iowa City died on Wednesday, December 25, 2002 following a short illness at the Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Iowa City. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2002 at the Gay and Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City, burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home in Iowa City. Memorials in Bill’s name may be given to Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Iowa City Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Bill was born on August 9, 1909 in Iowa City the son of Elmer and Glee Newmire Poggenpohl. He attended Iowa City Schools and married Mary Fern Cox on September 19, 1929. He farmed with his father then worked as a press operator at Economy Advertising and in 1932 went to work for Linder Tire where he worked for 68 years retiring in the spring of 2000. Bill was a past member of the Iowa City Moose Lodge # 1096 and the Iowa City Bowling Association where he served as past president and was inducted into the Iowa City Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1985.
His family includes a daughter: Mary Elaine Oxford of Iowa City, two grandsons: Gary and wife Maureen Soporito of Westlake Village, CA., Jeff and wife Jackie Soporito of Thousand Oaks, CA. four great-grandchildren, Tony Soporito, Jason, Justin and Jessica Soporito, two great great-grandchildren: Brandon and J.T. Soporito all of California, one brother: Robert and wife Marie Poggenpohl of Tiffin, one niece: Joan Kennedy of Riverside and four nephews: Jim Poggenpohl of Walcott, Tom Poggenpohl of Riverside John Poggenpohl of Iowa City and Steve Poggenpohl of Tiffin.
His parents, wife Fern who died on April 11, 2001, one brother, two sisters, one niece and one nephew preceded him in death. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for Bill’s family and his service.
