MARY HABERSTROH
Former School Teacher is Found Dead in Home Wednesday
Mary Haberstroh, about 78, 324 North Gilbert street, was found dead in her home Wednesday by police after neighbors summoned the department when they were unable to arouse anyone in the house.
Acting Coroner, George Callahan, said she apparently died of a heart attack Tuesday night as she was locking the back door. She was found lying across the door sill after police had forced a locked door to obtain entrance into the house.
Neighbors said they had visited her Tuesday when she seemed to be well.
Miss haberstroh was elected to teach in Iowa City in 1900, where she began at the old third ward school and later taught at Horace Mann School. She was a teacher for 34 years.
Since her retirement, she had lived alone in the house which neighbors believe was built by her father, Julius, a carpenter in Iowa City.
A lifelong resident of Iowa City, she had celebrated a birthday January 31.
She is survived by a brother, John Haberstroh, of Livingston Mont., two nephews, also in Livingston, and a niece and two nephews in St. Louis, Mo. Her parents, a sister and two brothers preceded her in death.
She was a member of St. Mary’s church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a former member of Teresan Study club.
Funeral services will be Saturday morning at St. Mary’s church at 9 o’clock. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s by family members cemetery.
Rosary will be recited Friday at 7:10 p.m. at the Hohenschuh mortuary where the body was taken.
This obituary was transcribed on 7 December 2007 from a copier copy by Peter G. Jacobs, spouse to Laureen M. Geppert Jacobs, great great grand daughter to Julius Haberstroh, Mary’s father. We assume the copy of a copy we have was copied from a clipping taken from The Press Citizen newspaper by family members shortly after Mary’s death on 18 February, 1948.
