Henry Reynolds, 85, of 818 Rundell Street in Iowa City, passed away peacefully, Sunday, October 14, 2007 at his home following a long illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10:00 am at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Reverend Michael Phillips officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be held at 7:30 pm. Visitation will then be held Thursday morning at the church from 9:00 – 10:00 am.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to benefit St. Wenceslaus Church and its future projects and fund drives.Henry was born January 31, 1922 on the family farm south of Iowa City, the son of Charles and Marie (Kleinschmidt) Reynolds. He attended rural school and Sharon High School. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith, when married, he converted to Catholicism.
He enlisted in the Army on January 20, 1942. Henry took basic training in Fort Knox, Kentucky. After basic training he was sent to the South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands and Midway Island. He returned to the states as an instructor at Fort Rucker, Alabama, then to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Fort Shelby, Mississippi with the combat engineers 1022 Treadway Bridge Company, then to Europe to build the Rhine River pontoon bridge.
Henry received the Pacific Theater ribbon, American Campaign ribbon, European, Africa, Middle East Victory ribbon, overseas bar and the good conduct medal. He supervised the training for enlisted specialists in the maintenance division.
He was honorably discharged from the Army on November 12, 1945 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. On his return from service he worked at Nall Motors, then for forty years at Moore Business Forms retiring in 1987. He married Thelma Dubisher February 5, 1945 in Iowa City.
He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Marquette Council 842 and the Holy Name Society. He was a great Hawkeye and Cubs fan. He was an avid naturalist and loved hunting. He loved to travel, he and his wife traveled to every state except Alaska. On their 40th Anniversary they spent two weeks in Hawaii.
Survivors include his wife Thelma of 62 years;
son, Terry Reynolds (Christine) of Iowa City
daughter, LuAnn Reynolds (Dave Parsons) of Iowa City;
two grandchildren, Sean Tyler Reynolds and friend Sheila Buccola of Dixon, Illinois and Amanda Renee Reynolds of Oskaloosa, Iowa;
several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.Henry was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Myrtle Yoder and Hazel Gingerich Jones.
