IOWA CITY

Carl J. Gochenour, 92 of 2023 Rochester Court, Iowa City, a long time employee of the University of Iowa, died Wednesday morning, November 6, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2002, at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, with the Reverends Paul Aiken and George Patterson officiating. Entombment will be in Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Carl was born February 5, 1910 in Gilmore City, Iowa, the son of Elvin and Rose (Davis) Gochenour. He married Lois Hughes on December 9, 1941. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. He worked in Administrative Data Processing at the University of Iowa for 43 years. He was director for the last 29 years there and retired in 1980. He was an original member of the College and University Machine Records Conference which was founded in 1956. He served on the board of CUMREC for many years. He received the Frank Martin Award for exemplary service to the college and university data processing community in 1976. He hosted the conference at the University of Iowa in 1968. He also was a founder of College and University Systems Exchange in 1962. In 1982 he received the CAUSE award for Professional Excellence for outstanding professional contributions to the field of administrative information systems, both at the University of Iowa and at the national level. Carl also was a member of the Big Ten Administrative Data Processing Directors’ Association. He served on the Babe Ruth board of directors and the Kirkwood Community College Board of Directors. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Elks, Mercy Guild and did volunteer work at Mercy Hospital. He served in the United States Army for 3 years during WWII.

Carl is survived by his wife, Lois of Iowa City, daughter, Susan Piper and her husband, Mike of Iowa City, son, Don Gochenour and his wife, Linda of Mission Viejo, California, 5 grandchildren; Stacy King and her husband, Chris of Carlsbad, California, Bryan Plumb of Wheeling, Illinois, Dana Plumb of Iowa City, Erin Gochenour of Rachel Gochenour of Mission Viejo, California, two step-grandchildren; Jillian Daugerdas and her husband, Russ of Skokie, Illinois and Ryan Piper of North Liberty, 2 step-great-grandchildren, Eleanor and Courtney Daugerdas, two sisters; Dorothy Boom and her husband, Elmer of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Vera Huddleston of Tennessee, his brother, Lloyd Gochenour and his wife, Ann of Humboldt, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
