Rose Mary Burns, 87, formerly of 4639 Sharon Center Road in Iowa City, died Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona after a lingering illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10:00am at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Reverend Rich Adam officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. A parish rosary will begin at 3:00 pm and a wake service at 7:30 pm Thursday. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Rose M. Burns Memorial Fund.
Rose was born December 11, 1919 in Washington County, Iowa, the daughter of Ed and Zita (Kron) Kasper. She was raised on a farm south of Riverside – moving to Iowa City in 1933. Rose married Louis “Justin” Burns on September 3, 1946 in Iowa City.
She helped raise her seven children and also worked as a cook at Oaknoll and later at Chatham Oaks. Rose was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Catholic Daughter’s of the America’s, Catholic Foresters, St. Wenceslaus Altar & Rosary and the Farm Bureau.
Survivors include her children, Stuart Burns (Carol) of Davenport, Janet Johnson of Snellville, Georgia, Stan Burns (Shellie) of Iowa City, Steve Burns of Lone Tree, Julie Neuzil (Bill) of Tiffin, Brian Burns (Nancy Blake) of Iowa City, Marlene Burns (Bob Peters) of Mound, Minnesota;
brother, Paul Kasper of Iowa City;
sister, Norma Swailes (Ernie) of Riverside and Margaret Hora of West Branch;
grandchildren, Renee Ash (Brian), Teresa Burns (Scott), Molly Burns, Andrew Burns, Cody Burns,
Ethan Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Sarah Burns, Katie Neuzil, Laura Neuzil, Jill Sutherland (Adam), and Rachel Peters,
two great grandsons, Ryan Eubanks-Johnson and Parker Sutherland;
brothers and sisters in law, Viola Kasper, Thomas (Rita) Burns, James (Eileen) Leland and Marian Burns; and many nieces and nephews.Rose was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2005, brothers, Louis and Cletus, a grandson, Lucas Johnson, brothers in law, Edward ‘Eddie” Burns, Robert Hora and sisters in law, Patricia Dikitolia and Anna Kathryn Burns.
