Rufine B. Anciaux, 85, of Coralville died Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Trinity
Pathways Hospice, Bettendorf, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am, Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at St. Thomas
More Church, Iowa City with Rev. Walter Helms officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville. Friends may call from 4 to 7pm Tuesday at Lensing’s Oak Hill,
210 Holiday Rd, Coralville, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30pm. In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be directed to Trinity Pathways Hospice or Iowa City Hospice.

Rufine was born February 21, 1922 in Dubuque, the daughter of August and Christine Busch Berning. She was a 1945 graduate of the Iowa City Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, and was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps. On September 30, 1947 she married Donald Anciaux in Dubuque. Donald had served as mayor of Coralville during the 1950’s. He died in 1992.

Rufine was a school nurse in the Iowa City Community School District and had been at various Iowa City elementary schools and West High School.

Rufine was a longtime member of St. Thomas More Church and had served on the
Johnson County/Iowa City Senior Center Commission, where she was a volunteer.
She was appointed to the various Johnson County committees, including the Johnson County Compensation Commission. Rufine volunteered at the Crisis Center Food Pantry
and was a member of the Red Hat Club and the Coralville American Legion Auxiliary.
She was actively involved in the Coralville community. Rufine and Donald had served as Market Masters at the Coralville Farmer’s Market, and she had served on a committee which received an award from the State of Iowa for their marketing efforts to promote the market.

Rufine enjoyed the time spent with her children and grandchildren. She was a sports spectator and traveler. She loved orchids.

Rufine is survived by her four children, Don (May) Anciaux of Iowa City and their children Nathan, Phillip, Don and Sarah; Christine Anciaux, Jean Anciaux and
Sue Anciaux, all of Davenport; one great granddaughter, Emilie; three siblings,
Ann (Dale) Cranfield of Montgomery, AL, Ruby Fitzgerald of White Bear Lake, MN,
Melvin (Lee) Berning of Eureka, CA.; brother-in-law, Ben VanHorne of Bozeman, MT.;
and her beloved Pomeranian, Cassie.

Rufine was preceded in death by her husband and nine siblings Hyacinth, Irene, Sr.Mary Catherine (Agnes), Rose, Cecelia, Lillian, August and Ruth.
