Edmund A. Freund, 93, of Iowa City died peacefully Thursday, September 06, 2007 at Pioneer Court in Lone Tree following a sudden illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00a.m. on Monday, September 10, 2007 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave. in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:30p.m.on Sunday, September 9, 2007. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ed was born April 25, 1914 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Arthur and Lydia (Grapp) Freund. On October 31, 1942 he married Marcella Cole. Ed worked for many years in the UI Physics Department as a machinist for the space program under Dr. James VanAllen. One of his accomplishments was building the tape recorder used in the Explorer III satellite that discovered the VanAllen Radiation Belt. He enjoyed many hours flying his J3 Piper Cub off the airstrip on his farm and dancing at the Moose.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marcella, two daughters, Judy Redeker and her husband Tom of Iowa City and Marti Freund and her husband Jeff Borchert of Iowa City, a son Edmund and his wife Charlene of Lodi, California and seven grandchildren; John, Matthew, Melissa, Emily, Alex, Abby and Faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Eldon and a sister Joan Beardsley.
