Lula “Doris” Metzler, age 86, of 2319 Nevada Avenue, Iowa City passed away peacefully Monday, November 18, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 23, 2002, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Harlan Gillespie officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 6 to 8pm Friday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in her memory to the American Heart Association or Iowa City Hospice. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Doris’s family and her services.

Doris was one of twelve children born to Rufus C. and Lula Susan Jackson. She was born April 26, 1916, in Grovesprings, Missouri. She married Lloyd Milton Metzler, February 28, 1934, in Papillion, Nebraska. She was employed by the University of Iowa Residence and Food Service for over thirty years, retiring in 1980.

Her family includes daughters, Jane and her husband, Joe Featherston of Roy, Utah, and Sharon Metzler of Iowa City, and her son, David M. Metzler of Coralville; grandchildren Bill Reddick Jr.and his wife, Carol of Iowa City, Lloyd Reddick and his wife, Barb of Remlap, AL, Laura and her husband, Ted Hershberger of Coralville, Debbie and her husband, Tim Richardson of Ogden, UT; Shelley and her husband, Tony Cone of North Liberty, Mike Featherston of Roy, UT and Julie and her husband, Chad Smith of Roy, UT; Fifteen Great Grandchildren, and Three Great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Neal Jackson and his wife, Carolyn of Tekamah, NE, and Leonard Jackson and his wife, Marilyn of Fremont, NE; two sisters, Barbara Lockhart of Seattle, WA, and Iris and her husband, Bob Ray of Oakland, NE.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lloyd, daughter, Joyce Reddick; grandson, John Featherston; and six brothers and one sister.

Those who knew Doris knew her love for quilting, bowling, gardening, bingo, collecting and she was an all around sports fan.
