Velma (Duwa) Waldschmidt, 81, of Iowa City, died Thursday, March 29, 2007 at Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City with Rev. Kenneth Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Riverside. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. Sunday April 1st at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave, where a parish vigil service will begin at 7:30 P.M. and a rosary to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made out to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the American Heart Association.

Velma was born on August 10, 1925 in rural Richmond, Iowa to Lawrence”Doc” and Agnes Dora (Bopp) Duwa. She married Ralph Waldschmidt on February 6, 1945 in Richmond, Iowa. They lived in rural Riverside until 1979, then moved to Iowa City. Velma was a baker at University of Iowa for over 17 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Moose Lodge, Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Daughters of America, VFW in Riverside. Velma enjoyed playing bingo, crafts, quilting, and flower gardening.

She is survived by three children: Leon Waldschmidt (Doris) of Sioux Falls, SD, Donna Benson (Scott) of Robins, IA, Debra Martin (David) of Longmont, CO; two grandchildren: Haley Beckstrand (Scott) and Kari Drymon (Jerry); three great-grandchildren: Conner and Carlie Beckstrand and Shae Drymon; nine siblings: Vera Gingerich of Iowa City, Lucille Duwa (Leroy) of Iowa City, Cleola Schneider of Iowa City, Clifford Duwa (Kathleen) of Washington, IA, Delores Krotz of Iowa City, Irma Altenhofen (Dennis) of rural Washington, Elaine Lee (Fred) of Costa Mesa, CA, Dean Duwa (Connie) of Ainsworth, IA, and Janet Hagie (Merlin) of Washington, IA.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph and a brother Dale Duwa.
