Dorothy Ponto 1926-2002

Dorothy M. Zeithamel Ponto, age 75, of 1328 Ellis Blvd. N.W. in Cedar Rapids died suddenly at her home on Sunday. Funeral services will be held on Thursday June 13, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at the Gay and Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City with burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home followed by an Eagles service at 7 p.m. Memorials may be donated to the Preucil School of Music to establish a memorial scholarship.
Dorothy was born on November 2, 1926 in White, South Dakota the daughter of Louie E. and Gladys Steinback Krenz. After graduation from White High School she attended cosmetology school. In 1951 she married Robert E. Zeithamel and in 1996 married Wayne Ponto. Dorothy was a homemaker while raising her two sons, Doug and David, and later worked at Montgomery Wards and The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. After retirement, Dorothy continued to work part-time for the Kalona Bakery in Iowa City. She was a member of the Eagles Fraternity for 32 years where she served as President and Secretary; was a long time member of the V.F.W, the American Business Women’s Association, bowling leagues in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, and was a member of the congregation at St. James First United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. Dorothy’s hobbies included crafts, gardening, and cheering on her beloved Cubbies.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Doug and wife Sonja Zeithamel of Iowa City and David Krenz of Fort Worth, Texas; Grandsons Allen and wife Debbie Krenz of Fort Worth, TX, Jeremy and wife Bonnie Krenz of Grand Prairie, TX, Brad and wife Marcia Zeithamel of Olathe, KS, and Tim Zeithamel of Iowa City; Great grandchildren Ethan and Kerasten Krenz and Sarah Krenz; Two brothers Vernon and Roger Krenz, and five sisters, Myrtle Kruse, Marilyn Romsdahl, Marion Buckholz, Doris Olson, and Ardith Texley.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wayne, brother Walter, and sister Norma.
