Helen was born August 17, 1910 in Jasper County, Iowa, the daughter of Bolin and Maude (Offill) Young. She graduated from Newton High School and attended the University of Iowa. While at the University she was a member of the orchestra, playing the violin. On June 6, 1937 she married Purl L. Sentman in Iowa City. The couple farmed in the Tiffin and North Liberty areas of Johnson County for many years. Purl died September 3, 1985.

She was a fifty year member of Oxford United Methodist Church, O.E.S., and Bethlehem Shrine No. 8 of Iowa City. She so enjoyed playing her violin at church functions, O.E.S. functions, graduations, and for her family and friends. Many people in this area and around the country are the beneficiaries of her love for crocheting. She has shared her work with many over the years.

Helen’s family includes a son and his wife, Robert and Ellen Sentman of Tiffin; two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Fred Shepherd of Helena, MT, and Janet and Jon White of Iowa City; 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a sister and her husband, Ethel and Harold Harryman of Douds, Iowa.

Her family wishes to thank Kris Hollander and all at Mercy Home Health Care, Dr. Nyle Kauffman and all the staff at Towncrest Medical Associates, the staff at Mercy Hospital, and all at Bickford Cottage for the very loving care they have shown our mother and grandmother.
