Robert A. Vevera, age 69 of 2839 Friendship Street, Iowa City died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Mercy Hopsital in Iowa City following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Robert Welsh officiating. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Friday at the funeral home where Bob will be in state with Iowa City Police Department Honors. A memorial fund has been established in his memory. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for Bob’s family and his services.

Bob was born and raised on Dodge Street of Iowa City on May 23, 1933 the son of Albert J. and Geneva M. (Yocom) Vevera. He attended Iowa City schools, graduating from Iowa City City High School in 1951 having lettered in both football and baseball. On July 22, 1952 he married his high school sweetheart, Jane Dutcher. Bob joined the Iowa City Police Department on February 1, 1962. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant before leaving the force in 1975. He has owned and operated Vevera and Sons Masonary in this area since 1967. Bob was elected to the Iowa City City Council in 1976, reelected in 1978, serving as mayor in 1978 and 1979, leaving the council in 1981 at the end of his term.

His family includes his wife of nearly fifty years, Jane; daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Garth Von Ahsen of Williamsburg, Cindy and Steve Cook of Iowa City; sons, Mick Vevera of Iowa City, and Steve Vevera of Iowa City; ten grandchidlren, Jane, John and Josh Von Ahsen, Luke and Andy Vevera, Stephanie and her husband, David Sanchez, Gabe and his wife, Michelle Cook, Jake, Jared, and Jace Vevera; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Harrison Sanchez; two sisters, Betty Park of El Paso, TX, and Cokie and her hsuband, Haywood Hatcher of Miami, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Susan, and a granddaughter, Ann Von Ahsen.

His love for Iowa City and the police department were second only to his love and devotion for his family. The pointing of his finger, the colorful language and his big smile will be missed by all those who knew him.
