Iowa City Dateline:Robert L. “Bob” Canney, age 75 of 3032 Wayne Avenue, Iow City died Saturday, August 10, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Robert Gebel officiating. Burial will be at the Cedar memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids after a luncheon is held at the church following the services. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Monday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City and after 9am till services on Tuesday at the church. A memorial fund has been established I Bob’s memory. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City are caring for Bob’s services and his family.
He was born March 18, 1927 in Newton, Iowa the son of John and Alice Mickle Canney. On June 19, 1949 he married Norine E. Schirm at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. The couple for many years lived in Newhall where they owned and operated the Newhall Locker Plant from 1954 until 1965. In 1966 Bob and his wife, Norine established Shamrock Construction Company which they continued to operate. They moved their business and home to Iowa City in 1972.
Bob was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City, and while living in Newhall he was a boy scout leader, member of the volunteer fire department, and the commercial club.
His family includes his wife, Norine; son and his wife, Michael and Anita Canney of Des Moines; daughter and her husband, Patricia and Marvin Porter of Newhall; five grandchidlren, Aaron, Ashley, and Austin Canney, Nicole and her husband, Jeff Williamson, and Kristin Smolik; brother and his wife, Don and Gloria Canney of Cedar Rapids; sister, Peg Weno of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Darlene Brejcha, and Zita Lillig; and brotehr, Jack Canney.
Bob loved his family, his business, being Irish, and the outdoors, hunting, and fishing.
