Richard R. Carlson, age 78 of 11 Durham Court, Iowa City died Wednesday, October 24, 2001 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness. Services will be held at 7:30pm Thursday (today) at the Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation service in Iowa City. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5pm until services on Thursday. The service will be a joint service of tribute to Richard and his wife, Evelyn who died on August 29, 2001.
His family includes three children and their spouse; Judith and Kevin Compton of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Janet and Richard Boresi of Coralville, and Richard and Melanie Carlson of Grayslake, Illinois; and six grandchildren, Kristen Boresi, Ewan and Amelia Compton, and David, Lauren, and Berit Carlson.
Richard was born on September 15, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph..D from the University of Chicago. Richard and Evelyn were married in 1951 and moved to Iowa City, where he began teaching physics at the University of Iowa that same year. He retired from teaching at the University of Iowa in 1994 and became professor emeritus. Richard was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society, and the American Physical Society. He served on the Board of Directors for the Fermi Laboratory in Chicago. During his teaching career, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Although teaching and research were his vocations, he was also an avid reader. Richard and Evelyn enjoyed traveling to Europe and spending time with their children and grandchildren. They were devoted to each other and celebrated their 50th. wedding anniversary in August of this year.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Iowa City Hospice or the University of Chicago.
