NORTH LIBERTY
Richard W. Burger, 77, of 1180 Hauer Drive, North Liberty, died Saturday, September 14, 2002 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00a.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2002, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Reverend Kenneth Kuntz, officiating. Burial with military rites provided by local military organizations will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30PM. Memorials may be made to the Systems Unlimited Foundation or the American Diabetes Assn. Online condolences may be directed to www.lensingfuneral.com

Richard W. Burger was born February 22, 1925 in Iowa City, the son of Frank and Lulu (Blecha) Burger. He was a graduate of City High School in 1943 and the University of Iowa in 1950, with a BS degree in civil engineering.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Hostetler in Davenport in 1947. He served as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II and later in the Korean Conflict.

Richard was Secretary - Treasurer of Burger Construction Company until 1986. Following retirement he was a construction consultant.

Richard Burger served two mayoral terms, from 1964 and 1965. He later served as president of Systems Unlimited, an organization that helps people with developmental disabilities live independently and started the Systems Unlimited Foundation. An annual golf day fund raiser for the group bears his name. He had served as President of the Board for Systems Unlimited and it’s Foundation.

Dick had served on the Iowa City Council, the Iowa City Planning Commission, Johnson County Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Regional Planning Commission. He had served as President of the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce, served of the Business Development (BDI) and as Board President of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He was active with the Master Builders of Iowa and Iowa City Noon Rotary, of which he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He had been inducted into the Iowa City High School Hall of Fame. He received the 9 Who Care Award from KCRG-TV

Richard is survived by his wife, Shirley of North Liberty, his son, Michael F. Burger of Des Moines, his daughter, Patricia Jean Burger of Iowa City, five grandchildren; Jason and Ben Burger, Amanda, Brianne and Zachary Sales.
