Daniel B. “Dan” Smith, 59, of Kalona and formerly of Iowa City, died unexpectedly Saturday, October 7, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a long & courageous battle with cancer.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, October 18th at 10:30 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City with Reverend John McCrory officiating. The family will greet friends from 9:30 am until service time. Burial of cremains will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
Instead of flowers, the family requests memorials to the (Iowa City) Mercy Hospital Foundation for cancer services. Following the graveside services, the family will host a reception at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road in Coralville.

Dan was born June 8, 1947 in Iowa City, the son of Dewayne & Alice (Zinkula) Smith. He graduated from high school in West Liberty and from 1965 to 1968 served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Dan married Sharon Kay Jensen on August 22, 1969. The couple later divorced. On December 29, 2001, Dan married Judy Deitrich.

Dan worked for 23 years at the University of Iowa (Physics Dept.) on the NASA contract. Since 1996 he has been with Rockwell International in Coralville as a quality engineer. Dan enjoyed fishing, walking and traveling.

Survivors include his wife Judy; daughter, Dana Smith & her friend Eric of West Branch and son Dustin Smith & his wife Renny of Indonesia; step-son Justin Deitrich & his wife Victoria of Iowa City; grandchildren, Isabelle, Jace & Sarina; brother, Maynard Smith & his wife Pat of Iowa City, sisters, Betty Brown & her husband Hunter of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Pat Bean of Muscatine and several nieces and nephews.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Mary.
