Wayne Kempf, 79, of Iowa City died Friday, May 5, 2006 at UIHC from complications related to Alzheimer’s Disease.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, May 8, 2006 at 10am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7pm, Sunday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service. Memorial donations may be directed to the Catholic Community Foundation for Regina, Pathways Adult Daycare Center or Iowa City Hospice.
Wayne was born October 26, 1926, in Iowa County, Iowa, near Holbrook, the son of Emra and Barbara (Schlabaugh) Kempf. Wayne married Dolores Schnoebelen on November 24, l947 in Riverside, Iowa.
Wayne lived in the Parnell area from 1947 to 1955, where he farmed and later operated Kempf Grocery Store. Wayne was a partner in Kempf and Riggenbach Drywall and Construction Co for 10 years. The Kempf family lived in Williamsburg from 1955 to 1965 at which time they moved to Iowa City.
In 1963, Wayne was a founding partner of Iowa City Ready Mix. In 1966 he established United Concrete Co. in Waterloo, and was also a founding partner of Metro Pavers in Iowa City. During the 1980’s Wayne was one of the partners who owned Old Capitol Mall.
Wayne was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City Elks Lodge, the Iowa Concrete Paving Association, the American Concrete Paving Association and the Iowa Good Roads Association.
Wayne always had a tremendous work ethic and took great pride in his family, with whom he loved spending time. He and his wife enjoyed their winters in Pompano Beach, Florida.
Wayne is survived by his wife Dolores; two sons, Nick (Sue) Kempf of Iowa City and their children, Wayne T. (Kari) Kempf of Fairfax, IA., Kathie (Joe) Grider of Cedar Rapids, and Karen Kempf of Iowa City; and Joe (Renee) Kempf of St. Charles, IL.; step- grandchildren Jessica Hayes of Oregon, Katie Hayes of Chicago and Holly Hayes of California; three great-grandchildren Colin Thomas and Kaia Christina Kempf and Cole Grider; three brothers, John Kempf of Cedar Rapids, Lester (Mary Francis) of Iowa City and Russell (Betty) Kempf of Wellman; three sisters, Orpha Kempf of Iowa City, Martha (Vryl) Justice of Cedar Rapids and Olivia Ann Abshire of Sun City, AZ. and sister-in-law Ruth Kempf of Iowa City.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Warren and Walter, a sister Alice Kempf and an infant grandson Richard Kempf.
