Sharon High School Holds Final Reunion

The 10 alumni attending the Sharon High School reunion Saturday, August 9, regretfully voted to discontinue meeting annually, as they have done most years since it closed in 1944, during WWII. As in the past several years they met for a potluck dinner in the Sharon Center United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Those present from the class of 1939 were Marjorie (Schwimley) Miller from Sharon and Lester Bell from Lone Tree; class of 1941 were Walace Fisher from Wellman; class of 1942 were Herb (Junior) Hartzler from Kalona, Ruby (Jacobs) Samuelson, Ruth (Jacobs) Hammer from Lansing, Michigan and Alice (Winborn) Thompson from Ames; class of 1943 were Marietta (Hartzler) Yoder from Sharon and Charlotte (Yoder) Lackender from Kalona; class of 1944 were Doris (Grout) Moore from Kalona. Also in attendance were 14 friends and family members.
Following the wonderful meal there was much reminiscing and animated discussion of the history of SHS. It was initially organized in 1898, disbanded in 1918 and re-organized in 1923 by the farsighted members of the community. There was much discussion of the building of the 'new' building in 1930 and of being supported by the annual Ox Roast each fall, at which time pit roasted beef and all the trimmings was served to over 1500 people in one evening by the members of the community with entertainment in the form of a carnival provided by the students. Also recalled were several outstanding accomplishments by the SHS basketball teams and several extracurricular activities that were not on the school agenda.
While the official vote was to end the reunions on the high note of this year's gathering, the opportunity was left open to get together again if any one wishes to call a few people to get together.
