Velocity joins C.R. sports realm
New Training, medicine center will open Monday
By Cindy Hadish

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Cedar Rapids area is fast becoming a sports-training mecca.
St. Luke's Velocity Sports Performance will soon join training facilities and sports medicine centers like Mercy's Acceleration program in Cedar Rapids and the UI Sports Medicine Clinic in Iowa City.
Velocity, 5313 N. Park Pl. NE, opens Monday, teaming with St. Luke's Human Motion Institute Sports Medicine Center.
With senior physical therapist Kris Sehr at the helm, the Sports Medicine Center will provide therapy for injuries with a doctor's order, while three coaches at Velocity will work on sports conditioning.
JoAnn and Scott Jennings of Marion are co-franchisees of Velocity, along with St. Luke's Hospital and track standout Joey Woody of Cedar Falls.
Woody, 31, a former Iowa City High School track star and University of Northern Iowa NCAA champion, competes in track internationally and also is director of coaches for Velocity.
Coaches like Curt Lamb, who ran through training techniques Thursday with Woody, have exercise science or related degrees.
Children as young as 6, up to adults of any age will be trained and conditioned by Woody's team in one-hour to 1 1/2 hour group or individual sessions.
Woody said trainers will work on movement, correct body position and other aspects of conditioning that work for any sport or concentrate on specifics of one sport.
Programs also are available for occupants such as firefighters and police officers.
Velocity staff won't replace school coaches, Woody said, but will work with area coaches as needed.
"We're not there to coach a sport, we're there to coach an athlete," he said.
Workers this week put finishing touches on the 12,200 square-foot facility, which features Olympic-style weight training equipment, a 60-yard, three-lane synthetic track for speed training and 32 yards of football turf for speed and agility drills.
JoAnn Jennings said the site is the first Velocity facility in Iowa.
Packages start at $310 for 12 training sessions and include a pre-fitness evaluation.
