Wm. J. Pope -CA Gold Rush?

My GG Grandfather, William Johnson Pope, arrived in Jefferson County abt. 1844, with his wife Dorcas Lathers Pope and their two small sons George & James (my Great-Grandfather). Family lore says William left the family to join the gold rush to CA leaving behind his wife and five children. (last child born May 1850). However, he remained in CA and never returned to Jefferson Co. His wife lived in the county (Des Moines, Locust Grove)until about 1870. Are there any records showing who left Jefferson County to join the gold rush to CA and if so -is he listed as a participant?
