In Response To: William Wilson Cline (Georgia LaRue)

You requested information this morning about the names of the parents of William Wilson Cline, June 6, 1824 – Feb. 10, 1868.

Iowa did not require that counties keep death records until 1880, and even after that in many rural areas the recordkeeping was somewhat hit or miss. As a result, there are no death records or certificates available that would have the kind of information that you are seeking for WWC.

I looked in the genealogy section of the Fairfield Library this afternoon, and unfortunately there isn’t anything in the family group sheet files for this Cline family that provide the names of his parents.

One family group sheet did, however, give his place of birth as “Penn.”. That entry was not sourced, however. But at least it gives some starting point for you – I would suggest using Ancestry.com or some similar research website to search the census reports for Pennsylvania for 1830 and 1840, using William Wilson Cline’s name, and perhaps some variations of it, as the search keywords. The consensus of the family group sheets that I found seemed to be that WWC was born on about June 6, 1824. That would make him about five or six years old in the 1830 census, if such young family members were even counted. Add ten years to that for the 1840 census. Perhaps by checking the names and ages of the children that you can find in any available Pennsylvania census reports you might be able to at least narrow the possible names of parents.

While there were a number of family group sheets for WWC they dealt with his marriages and children as a result of his marriages, but not one f.g.s. gave any hint as to WWC’s parents’ names.

I did not find any references to an obituary for him either; given the number of people that were interested in this Cline family over the years I would imagine that if there was an obituary for him it would have been noted somewhere. None was referenced that I could find.

I’m sorry that I can’t be of much further local help for Jefferson County, but at least these are a few ideas to go on.

/Richard
