BATAVIA. Merle SMOTHERS, 68, died Sun. at his home in Batavia. Campbell Funeral home in Eldon. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.

Born Dec. 5, 1901, at Springfield, Iowa, son of Ora and Nora PENCE SMOTHERS. He farmed in the Delta area for many years and later lived in Eldon before moving to Batavia in 1960. Married Stella WILCOX July 20, 1933.

Surviving are his widow and one daughter, Mrs. Jean DeVORE, Batavia; also four granddaughters and sisters and brothers: Mrs. Iola BRYANT and Mrs. Doris BRYANT, both of Iowa City; William SMOTHERS, Long Tree; Dwight SMOTHERS of Florida and Earl SMOTHERS of Washington. One brother is deceased. Member of the Christian Church.
